Steve with Breeze (left) and Stormy qualified for '03 Master National.

2003 Event Results

Due to Steve's recent eye surgery, handling duties for the Feb.. Hunt Tests were turned over to "Super Bird Boy" Eddie Noga

Despite never having handled the dogs before (and never having handled in a Master), Eddie took 3 dogs to the Rose Country Hunt Test near Canton, TX. Receiving Master Passes were Nick's Chocolate Rose, S.H. and Nike, J.H. Nike, in fact, had bypassed the Senior and was only 14 months old!!

Also at Rose Country was client Johnnie Pechal, who passed his yellow female, Daisy's Tru Sunset, in the Junior. Daisy was the youngest dog entered at 7 months old

The following week, Doc's Perfect Storm, M.H. & Watermark's Cool Breeze, M.H. returned to competition after a 4 month hiatus for hunting season. Both dogs needed only 3 passes to qualify for the '03 Master National

Eddie traveled to the Northeast Louisiana Hunt Test in Columbia, LA. Despite the long layoff, Stormy & Breeze both passed, as did Nike, who is well on his way to becoming the youngest dog qualified for the '03 Master Natl.

Nike's performance at such a tender age is amazing, but not unprecedented at Sulphur River Kennels. Stormy began the spring '02 season with a Master pass at 13 months, one of the youngest Master passes in Hunt Test history

Steve resumed handling duties at Bryan/College Station and received Master passes with Rose, Breeze, and Stormy. This was a very challenging Master, with only 10 out of 31 passing. Many dogs succumbed to the 1st series, which featured a quadruple mark setup followed by a double blind retrieve

All 5 master dogs went back into action at Waterloo Retriever Club Test held near Giddings, Tx. The field of 40 dogs was nearly cut in half in the 1st series triple mark/double blind. The 2nd series water triple thinned the field further, and the 3rd series water triple/water blind left only 17 still standing. When the ribbons were awarded, all 5 Sulphur River dogs received passing scores: Breeze, Stormy, Nike, Rose, and Maggie, who received her first Master pass. All 5 are 2 years old or younger!!!

Breeze and Stormy have now qualified for the 03 Master National.

The following week, Steve traveled to College Station for the Houston Golden test. Stormy, Breeze, and Rose received passing scores.

At the DFW test held April 12 and 13, bad luck fell on Maggie and Rose, who both came in season. Maggie was sent off to be bred to FC Pin Oaks Texas Rex, but Rose will be back campaigning for her MH in a few weeks. She needs only 1 more pass!

At the test, Steve passed 2 out of 3 Master dogs, Stormy and Breeze, while Nike succumbed to his youthful age (16 months) and broke. In the senior, Toothacres Lean Mac Lizzy, J.H. received her first pass. Junior dogs, Rebel's Best Son, handled by owner Glen Coterill, and Daisy's Tru Sunset, handled by owner Jonnie Pechal, received their J.H. titles with 4 for 4 passes.

On April 19 and 20, Steve journeyed to Hutto, Tx. for the Alamo test. Passing the Master were Nike, Breeze, and Sugar Bullet, MH, who was recently moved to SRK from another trainer. Nike, still only 16 months old, is rapidly closing in on his Master title and Master National qualification. Breeze continues to roll with her 6th consecutive pass of the Spring. Maggie and Rose were scratched due to "in season".

In the Senior, Lizzie got her 2nd pass. She lined both the land blind and water blind.

The final week of April saw Steve traveling to the Ozark Hunt Test near Fayetteville, AR. The first series featured a challenging test. On a "walkup" to the line, a live flyer was flighted at 25 yards and shot among the goose decoys. The dogs were pulled off this mark and sent on a blind retrieve. Upon returning, two more marks were thrown. After retrieving all 3 marks, the dogs ran another blind.

After 3 demanding series, only 14 of 33 Master dogs were left. 5 of these were Sulphur River Kennel dogs: Breeze, Nike, Rose, Stormy, and Sugar.

Rose has now completed her M.H. Title and qualified for the 03 Master National to be held in Thomasville, GA.
